Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors and sources of employment in the Canton. During 2004, 66 373 tourists visited the Canton, of which 33 403 were foreigners. During the same year, the hospitality industry boasted a revenue of 10 513 thousand KM.

Agriculture and Fishing

The total number of people employed in agriculture in 2003 was 3521. The amount of arable land in the same year was 30 477 ha, while 14 082 ha were used. Of the total available arable land, the majority was used for planting (plough-fields and gardens). Of the total amount of arable land, only about 50% is used.

The per capita GDP of the Canton increased between 2000 and 2002, so that for example, using market prices it was 2658 KM per capita in 2002, and 2985 KM per capita in 2003, which is above the national average. Growth, therefore, can be judged as positive and successful. The Canton’s GDP increased constantly between 2000 and 2003.

The Hercegovacko-Neretvanski Canton (HNC) has an area of 4401 square kilometres and has 481 settlements organised into 17 townships. It has a population of 217 859 people and an average population density of 49.5 people per square kilometre. There are 151 345 people in the active work force, or 69.5% of the population. The natural population growth of the county is positive, and has a value of 2.0 per thousand inhabitants.
