Transportation, Roads and the Environment

The transport and road industry is a key industry in the PGC, even more so at the County than at the state level. This is demonstrated by the statistics of the number of employees in the said sector on the County and state level (in 2003, 13.76% in PGC, in 2001 6.73% at the state level), by the total revenue generated by the sector, that is GDP (in 2003, 9.91% in PGC, in 2001 8.3% at the state level), by the number of businesses (in 2003, 7.9% in PGC, in 2001, 4.55% at the state level).

Tourism

Tourism is one of the most important economic activities and sources of employment in the County. Statistically, the PGC is one of the two strongest tourism counties in Croatia, accounting for 23% of all tourist visits to the country. During the first 9 months of 2004, 1 693 461 tourists visited the PGC, an increase of 1% from the previous year.

Agriculture and Fishing

Agriculture provided employment for 282 people in 2003. In that same year, the total number of farms in the agriculture industry was 10 111, largely made up of family farms whose primary economic activity is agriculture. The total amount of arable land that year was 20 972 hectares, while the amount used was 17 741 hectares, the majority of which was occupied by plough-land and gardens. During 2003, 38 firms were active in the agriculture sector.

Macroeconomic Trends

Economic growth was positive again during 2004, so that the total revenue for the first 9 months of the year increased by 4.8% (although it was accompanied by an increase in expenses of 6.4%). The expected revenue for 2004 is 27.8 billion HRK. This increase in revenue is largely due to sales in the domestic market (8.9% increase).

Territory and Demographic Trends

The Primorsko-Goranska County (PGC) encompasses an area of 3582 square kilometres and is divided into 14 cities and 21 townships. It has a population of 305 505 people, with an average population density of 85 inhabitants per square kilometre.
