Tourism is one of the most important economic activities and source of employment for the region of Kopar, which has a 17.6 km coastline on the Adriatic Sea. During 2002, 80 750 tourists visited Koper, of which 30 630 were foreigners.

During 2004 there were 4435 active firms in Koper, which accounted for 2.9% of all active firms on the national level. Of these firms, most were in manufacturing (405), commerce (840), tourism (276), construction (476), as well as public and other services (893).

The Region of Koper encompasses an area of 311.2 square kilometres and is divided into 39 townships. It has a population of 48 453 people, with an average population density of 155.7 inhabitants per square kilometre.
