The number of registered automobiles in 2002 was 740 277. The region has a total of 7422 km of roads, of which 352 km are motorways, 632 km are state roads, 1614 km are regional roads, and 4809 km are local roads. During 2001 there were 5130 automobile accidents with an average fatality rate of 3.1%, which is above the national average.

Tourism

Tourism is one of the most important economic activities and sources of employment in the region of Abruzzo. During 2003, 1 344 054 tourists visited Abruzzo, of which 189 254, or 14%, were foreigners. In that same year, 6 856 015 overnight stays were recorded, of which 1 065 481, or 15.5%, were those of foreign tourists.

Agriculture accounts for 4.5% of the economy in Abruzzo, and employed 29 000 people in 2001. In 2000, the total number of farms in the agriculture industry was 82 833, largely made up of family farms whose primary economic activity is agriculture.
