The transport and road industry is a key industry in the PGC, even more so at the County than at the state level. This is demonstrated by the statistics of the number of employees in the said sector on the County and state level (in 2003, 13.76% in PGC, in 2001 6.73% at the state level), by the total revenue generated by the sector, that is GDP (in 2003, 9.91% in PGC, in 2001 8.3% at the state level), by the number of businesses (in 2003, 7.9% in PGC, in 2001, 4.55% at the state level).
This is also confirmed by statistics regarding shipping and transitory shipments. According to end of year statistics for 2003, 492 businesses or 7.9% of all businesses in the County were registered in the shipping, warehousing and roads sector of the economy. Most of these firms (145) were active in surface shipping, while, 113 firms were active in the shipping accompaniment and assisting sector, 23 firms in the maritime and coastal shipping sector, 7 firms in the re-loading and warehousing sector, 3 firms in post and telecommunications, and 2 firms in air shipping.
