The Primorsko-Goranska County (PGC) encompasses an area of 3582 square kilometres and is divided into 14 cities and 21 townships. It has a population of 305 505 people, with an average population density of 85 inhabitants per square kilometre.
Population aging is active in the County, so that in 2001 the younger segment (0-14) of the population decreased and the older segment (65+) of the population increased with an aging index of 109.4. As a result, the average age in 2001 was 40.2 years. The natural growth of the region between 2001-2003 was negative, largely as a result of falling birth rates and growing mortality rates, making the overall rate –1.166.
